Rosemary & Co Series 93 - Pure Sable Spotter - Size 1

A Spotter is a specific brush shape that miniature painters often discover late and then wonder how they managed without. The head is shorter and stubbier than a Pointed Round — the point appears smaller at first glance — but the belly is proportionally fuller, giving the brush an unusually large paint reservoir for its tip size. The result is a brush that holds a significant amount of paint while still delivering a precise, controlled point.

Handmade in Yorkshire from Pure Red Sable hair, the Series 93 Spotter is designed for retouching and fine detail work where control over both paint volume and placement matters. The shorter tip provides a stiffer, more controlled stroke than a Pointed Round of equivalent size: useful when you need precision without the flex of a longer bristle.

For miniature painting the spotter earns its place in specific situations:

  • Pupil and eye detail on 28mm faces, where a long-tipped brush can flex unpredictably
  • Small object source lighting (OSL) where you need to stipple or dab paint with precision
  • Retouching mistakes cleanly without disturbing surrounding paint
  • Painting raised details — small gems, studs, rivets — where a fuller belly helps load enough paint for clean coverage in a single stroke
  • Script and fine inscription work where a short firm tip outperforms a longer one

The Series 93 is a specialist brush rather than an everyday workhorse. It sits alongside rather than replaces the Series 33 Pointed Round. Many painters find one spotter in a useful size that becomes a go-to for the specific tasks it handles better than anything else.

For a great synthetic alternative, try the Red Dot Collection Spotters.

Brush Care: Rinse in clean water after use, reshape the point gently, store upright or horizontal. A quality brush cleaner used occasionally will extend brush life significantly.
